{"id":2298,"date":"2017-06-25T15:03:05","date_gmt":"2017-06-25T19:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marksisco.com\/blog\/?p=2298"},"modified":"2017-06-25T15:07:55","modified_gmt":"2017-06-25T19:07:55","slug":"yellowstone-grand-prismatic-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marksisco.com\/?p=2298","title":{"rendered":"Yellowstone Grand Prismatic Spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many iconic locations in Yellowstone, one of my favorite being Grand Prismatic Spring. \u00a0According to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>The <b>Grand Prismatic Spring<\/b> in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world,<span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>after Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica. It is located in the Midway Geyser Basin.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Grand Prismatic Spring was noted by geologists working in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, and named by them for its striking coloration. Its colors match the rainbowdispersion of white light by an optical prism: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>The vivid colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red; the amount of color in the microbial mats depends on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and on the temperature gradient in the runoff.
