Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 ~<strong> Lady Bird Johnson<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A consistent theme of &#8220;times gone by&#8221; pervades my thinking when visiting the Smokies.\u00a0 This is partially because the area reminds me so much of my childhood growing up in hilly middle Tennessee.\u00a0 The rolling hillsides and natural forests were, and are, beautiful.\u00a0 They remind me of my early years when life moved slowly and was more contemplative.\u00a0 Sounds of streams relax the mind.\u00a0 Birds tweeting (the old fashion type of &#8220;tweeting&#8221;) and the wind blowing through the majestic oak trees yield to nothing or no one.\u00a0 These trigger feelings that clearly represent &#8220;home&#8221; to me.<\/p>\n<p>Another reminder of times past are the old structures throughout Cades Cove.\u00a0 This cabin window not only had an artistic, ethereal look that attracted me to photograph it, but it was also reminiscent of dad&#8217;s old wood shop behind our house.\u00a0 And his good friend Roger Bouldin&#8217;s hand built rustic cabin where he kept what seemed like an unimaginable number of antiques and relics.\u00a0 And his friend Luther Anderson&#8217;s old barn.\u00a0 And dad&#8217;s building down the hill in the hollow which housed his dog pens for his beloved hunting beagles.\u00a0 And our neighbor Freddie Roth&#8217;s barn, flanked by a couple of pine trees and adjacent to his garden.\u00a0 It always had a couple of old rustic tractors that either did not run or, at a minimum, needed a good bit of work.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t recognize or fully appreciate the fabric and textures of my environs while growing up, but now memories of them run incredibly rich and deep.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_597\" style=\"width: 593px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-597\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-597\" title=\"GSMNP12_0117-0119\" src=\"http:\/\/marksisco.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GSMNP12_0117-01191-583x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marksisco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GSMNP12_0117-01191-583x700.jpg 583w, https:\/\/marksisco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GSMNP12_0117-01191-853x1024.jpg 853w, https:\/\/marksisco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GSMNP12_0117-01191.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cabin Window - Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>5D MkII, 50mm f\/1.4, 1\/5sec @ f\/11, ISO 100<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cArt is the window to man&#8217;s soul.
