Repetition

Project 365 – Day 26

Have you ever noticed how repetition fills our lives?  Schedules and routines repeat themselves.  We form habits and preferences that we return to daily.  Sometimes repetition feels safe and predictable.  Other times it presents itself as monotony or “insanity” (doing the same thing and expecting a different result ….).  I work to embrace both by celebrating the repetitive things that bring structure and stability, while challenging those that take me into a rut or stifle creativity.  Distinguishing can often be tough.

First Love

Project 365 – Day 25

Every teenage boy lives for the day he gets his driver’s license, and maybe even more, the day he gets his first car.

I grew up in a tiny town, and I somehow convinced my parents to buy me a motorcycle around age 12.  I had my license by age 14.  Shortly after, I upgraded my motorcycle to a Honda XL100.  I loved that bike.  At age 16, though, having a car suddenly took on more appeal.  I don’t recall bugging my parents for my own car, but dad knew what every boy wants.  So he took it upon himself to strike a deal.  He traded my motorcycle plus a few hundred dollars for a then 11 year old car.  This wasn’t just any car, though.  It was a 1967 Mustang.  Fire engine red.  A true classic.  Sporty.  Easy to work on.  It was a first love of sorts.

Today I couldn’t help but reminisce when I saw this 1965 Mustang.  It was a different model year than mine, and had a number of differences like a larger engine.  But these differences were only minor.  All-in-all, it looked very much like the one that took me through my high school and college years.  “Molly” was like a best friend, and today I missed her.

Sophie

Project 365 – Day 24

Sophie is our 9 year old Westie.  This is one of her favorite spots (aside from napping on the sofa).  She loves looking out the windows on each side of our front door, watching for squirrels, kids, and anything that moves.  She’s a natural born hunter, and a playful one at that.

Dan and Suzanne

Project 365 – Day 23

Meet Dan and Suzanne, two dear friends for whom Kathy and I have come to know over the years.  They are tons of fun, as you can easily tell from their beautiful smiles.  😀

Thanks for a great evening!

COEXIST

Project 365- Day 22

Many of us have seen the bumper sticker “COEXIST“.  I saw one today, and for the first time I looked closely at the letters and observed each symbol representing many facets of society and culture.  From their website:  “Coexist was created to address the crisis of understanding that tears at the social fabric of societies around the world. Globalization has outpaced our understanding of one another, creating divisions that plague communities with prejudice, hate and violence.

Later today, I hiked on one of my favorite neighborhood trails.  I’ve always been intrigued by these power line structures which transect the trail and wooded areas of our local park.  Revisiting them on my walk triggered a reminder of the term “coexist” again.  This time, I thought about how our man made structures and inventions coexist with nature.  The term means “to exist separately or independently but peaceably,” which characterizes my thoughts perfectly.  Man-made against a background of nature-made, existing peaceably.  There’s room for both, though we often hear polarizing debates to the contrary.  After all, each are ultimately the result of God’s gift and handiwork.

Overload

Project 365 – Day 20

This age of technology has exponentially increased the amount and velocity of available information.  And, it continues to compound and accelerate.  The good:  The possibilities for learning, analyzing, comparing, communicating, and consuming are almost beyond imagination.  The (potentially) bad:  Our capacities to imagine, be creative, filter “noise”,  focus, and be content are often cluttered or suppressed.  This image, with it’s convergence of lines, textures, and words, is my metaphor for how we are inundated.  Invigorating yet overwhelming, all at the same time.

Commitment

Project 365 – Day 18

Today 4 people committed their lives to Christ through baptism at our 11am service.  These are powerful and moving moments.  It takes enormous courage to commit to anything privately, much less publicly.  Commitment often falls by the wayside, as we all know too well.  Think no further than how you may (or may not) be doing with recent New Years resolutions.  Somewhat ironically, a key theme of today’s study touched on this.  The prescription is to re-enlist; that is to say, each day we must re-enlist in those things that we are truly committed to.  Give priority to those that really count, not letting other less important things creep in and assume a higher priority.

This has subsequently triggered two thoughts:  1) May those who made the most important commitment of their lives today re-enlist this commitment each and every day, and  2) I thank God that He is completely committed to us, never failing to deliver on His promises.

Simplify

Project 365 – Day 17

As I walked into Katie’s salon today for a much needed haircut, the huge display of hair products caught my eye in the front window.   It’s a large yet simple and organized array of bottles, jars, and colors.  I knew a blog entry was looking me in the eye.

This photo was taken looking out toward the huge front display window.  No special lighting or setup was used, contrary to how it may look; only colorful bottles on a black shelf back lit by a flood of sunlight.

While further considering this image and the process of taking it, I realized it’s not only the colorful nature of the contents that caught my attention, but also the simplicity.  Simplicity has several synonyms:  Clarity, purity, certainty, transparency, unambiguity.  Each has a refreshing tone and implication.  Each reminds me of the attributes and benefits of keeping things simple.  Life.  Goals.  Priorities.  Relationships.  Wants.  Needs.  Hopes.  Faith.  The world is full of complications, many of which can rob or deceive us of the freedom to see and think clearly.  One of my biggest challenges is not to over think or over complicate.  Doing so often results in my overlooking the answer or blessing right in front of me.  I like to think I’ve grown wiser to this with age, but it still requires a lot of worthwhile effort.

A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough. ~ 1 Timothy 6:6

We’ve Got Sunshine

Project 365 – Day 16

Today was refreshing.  Sunshine, finally, after weeks of gray, dreary, and mostly wet weather.  It’s the dawn of a new weekend, with more in the forecast.

What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable. ~ Joseph Addison

Happy Birthday!

Project 365 – Day 15

My wonderful family surprised me with an awesome wine rack for my birthday!  Now we have two, the other of which my brother Mike gave me at Christmas.  Each is unique, and I love them both!  Today I was looking at them and their beautiful patterns and shadows.  I’m always drawn to repeating patterns.  Capturing the patterns of this particular rack, with the softness of shadows and very thin depth of field, seemed to play well together.  I also like the subtle color “notes” of blues, reds, and yellows.  🙂
